Friday Evening Connections and Reflections for 8/28/2020

Here are a few of this week's connections and reflections regarding alumni of Johnson University.

  • In an attempt to increase communication with all alumni, I have started sending out greetings on the day an alumnus celebrates a birthday. Some have replied to express gratitude and expand our dialogue.

    • Billy (JUTN '09) and Holly (Crawford '09) Knieriem both celebrated birthdays this week and they said, "We are grateful for the impact Johnson has had on our lives and our ministry!" They serve with Morrison Hill Christian Church in Kingston, Tennessee.

    • Trish (Wells, JUTN '04) Hansard said, "I am truly blessed with 69 years.  I am very thankful for God's mercy and grace!"

  • David Enyart (JUTN '68, former faculty) said, "We have a great love for the college and wish the very best for those serve and study in that place. Our grandson, Andrew, is a freshman at JU this fall. He is the youngest child of our daughter Crystal, and her husband David Reid (son of Wilbur Jr. and Linda Reid)."

  • Have you seen Johnson University's most recent "Johnson Magazine?"  If not, I highly encourage you to follow the link and read the articles about the many adoptive families that are a part of Johnson's community. In response to this article, Mark (JUTN '80) and Lisa (Laughren, JUTN '81) Andrews shared the following note:

    • "As adoptive parents ourselves (we have two children—now adults—whom we adopted from India), it was great to see this topic as the feature of the magazine. We recently started a non-profit organization called Adoptive Family Resources to provide support and resources...for  adoptive and foster families. Learn more at www.adoptivefamilyresources.org."

  • The family of Becky (Sims, JUTN '04 & '06) Eveland recently established a new scholarship fund to benefit international students attending Johnson University. If you would like to contribute to the Rebecca Jane Sims Eveland Memorial Scholarship Fund, please make checks payable to Johnson University with a memo line note for the "Becky Eveland Fund."

    • Becky was a beloved faculty and staff member at Johnson University who died suddenly on August 12, 2019. She was a generous, caring, and creative person who could turn the ordinary into something beautiful.  Becky is greatly missed, but her legacy of caring will live on through this scholarship fund.

  • Last week, I shared about a few of the family legacies connected to some of our new students. I just learned about another pair of freshmen with a family history. Caleb and Samantha Woodley have come to Johnson University's Tennessee campus from Greenville, North Carolina where their father, Stewart Woodley (JUTN '89), serves as the senior minister at University Church of Christ.

    • I asked Stewart if I could share Caleb's story and he said, "It was the prayers of many of the alumni that helped get Caleb to Johnson in the first place.  Miracles should be shared so God's good works can be glorified." Therefore, I encourage you to watch the video below to get a sense as to why we are fortunate to have Caleb as a freshman at Johnson this year. Please be in prayer for Caleb, Samantha, and their parents (Stewart and Stephanie) as they are separated by the miles.

  • Dr. Jody Owens (JUTN '95 and current faculty) wants to remind alumni about his upcoming Gospels Learning Retreat on September 28-October 1. Dr. Mark Scott will lead participants in a deep study of the Gospels focusing on the way the various genre of the Gospels impact the Gospel message. Also, Dr. Owens will host the Fall Spiritual Formation Leadership Summit October 19-21. Space is limited, so learn more and register at https://www.jodylowens.com/
Don't forget about the two upcoming events of special interest to Johnson University Florida alumni. First, all Florida alumni are invited to join the first ever "Virtual" Alumni Gathering on Saturday, September 12. Learn more and register at https://alumni.johnsonu.edu/e/virtual-florida-alumni-gathering.

Also, that evening, the School of Communication and Creative Arts will host "Let There Be Light." This special event features Dove Award-nominated recording artist Andrew Peterson and Arron Chambers, both graduates of the Florida campus. You can join this event for a $10 ticket to support scholarships for students on the Florida campus.  Learn more and register at https://alumni.johnsonu.edu/e/let-there-be-light.
