Friday Evening Connections and Reflections for 8/7/20

Friday Evening Connections and Reflections for August 7, 2020

  • COVID 19 is definitely impacting those we love from the Johnson community. Your prayers for healing and protection are appreciated.

    • After 61 days in the hospital and several close calls with eternity, Carol Stookey, the wife of Kent Stookey (JUTN ’79) is now at home and continuing to recover from a battle with COVID 19.  Please keep them in your prayers.

    • The Director of Church Relations and the Office Manager for Advancement on the Tennessee campus, Brian (JUTN '78 & '90) and Marie (Davidson, '79) Lakin, have been fighting COVID for the last two weeks. While Marie appears to be on the mend, Brian continues to struggle. Please keep them in your prayers as they try a new regimen of treatment to help Brian overcome this nasty virus.

  • If you haven’t heard by now, there is a new Johnson University Alumni Community available to help facilitate the communication between alumni. Alumni are invited to go to https://alumni.johnsonu.edu and sign up for an account. Keep up with the latest news from Johnson Alumni, post and read employment opportunities, find classmates with whom you have lost contact, and MORE!

  • One thing the new Alumni Community has done is open up the lines of communication for the sharing of alumni news and information.  Just this week, I have learned that:

    • Caleb and Ali (Bracey, JUTN '17) Pierce welcomed their son, Judah Finney Pierce, on November 13, 2019.

    • Charles Hahlen (JUTN ’76 & ’95) recently joined Summit Christian Church in Akron, Ohio, as their interim preaching minister while they search for a full time preaching minister.

    • Chris De Tar (JUTN '20) and Sydney McKneelen (JUTN '19) were married in May, 2020. They are both employed with First Christian Church of Yuma, Arizona, where Chris serves as the Worship Minister and Sydney serves as a Secretary and Media Technician.

    • On April 6, Kirk (JUTN '91) and Rebecca Langston were married in West Plains. Missouri. Kirk resigned from Shaker Prairie Christian Church on May 24 after 7 years of service. On July 1, he joined Penmac Staffing in West Plains, Missouri, as a staffing specialist and substitute teacher coordinator.

    • On August 1, Wes Tripp (JUTN '13) moved to Asheville, North Carolina to begin a new position as an Associate Attorney at Roberts & Stevens, P.A. focusing on litigation.

    • Philipp (JUTN '16) and Olga (Bulgak, JUTN '16) Timokhina welcomed a baby girl, Sophia Hope, on 7/24/2020.

    • Thanks to connecting through the Alumni Community, I learned today that Lacy Strain (JUTN '06) got married to Kofi Yirenkyi on August 5, 2017. Happy 3rd anniversary Mrs. Yirenkyi!

  • If you have any alumni news to share, you can send that to alumni@johnsonu.edu or send it through the "Share Your News" page on the Alumni Community.

  • In an effort to increase the interaction of Johnson University Florida graduates through the school's 40+ year history, Alan Tison (JUFL '81) and I will be hosting virtual alumni reunions on Saturday, September 12, specifically for graduates of the Florida campus. If you or someone you know is a member of a reunion-year class ('80, '85, '90, '95, '00, '05, '10, or '15), please visit the "Virtual Alumni Gathering" event page to register or share the event. Members of adjacent class years are also welcome to join in one of these virtual reunions.

  • On the evening of September 12, Johnson University Florida will host a special virtual event featuring Andrew Peterson (JUFL '97) and Arron Chambers (JUFL '92). Andrew will sing, Arron will speak, and you are invited! Tickets are $10 and proceeds benefit scholarships for Johnson University Florida students.  Go to the "Let There Be Light" event page to learn more and
    register.

  • I am blessed to work with a bunch of generous people. I recently asked 14 co-workers to join me in making a small gift of encouragement to an alumna and her children who tragically lost their husband/father. I suggested a small amount for each to give and they responded generously by almost doubling the total suggested.  So, as I said, I am blessed to work with people who generously respond to the needs of others.  Please join me in praising God for these generous Johnson University employees.
